The Supreme Court on Tuesday passed an act to all the states and union territories to implement the ‘One Nation One Ration Card’ scheme for migrant people till 31st July. This scheme lets migrant laborers get ration at their workplace in other states. The Supreme Court also added that the states and territories must arrange community kitchens for the workers and distribute food grains among them for free till the COVID Situation subsides.
The bench also issued a plea to the central and state governments where it is mentioned to ensure food security, cash transfers, transport facilities, and other welfare measures for migrant workers who faced difficulties due to curfews and lockdowns. The PIL was filed by activists Anjali Bharadwaj, Harsh Mander, and Jagdeep Chhokar.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court also ordered the creation of a portal with the help of the National Informatics Centre (NIC) where migrant workers can register so that they can get all the benefits of welfare schemes. The database of this portal will make the entire procedure of granting the benefits easy and extremely smooth.
